Cyber Attacks
Cyber attacks on a large scale have not been as frequent than they have been recently. This is not a surprise considering everyone uses more and more IT every day.
Here are a few things you can do to keep yourself best protected against Cyber Attacks in the future Please click on the headers for more info |
Update Windows Machines (PC's and servers)
Update any and all windows machines, PC's and servers.
Although the recent Cyber Attack focused on machines no longer supported by windows updates, like Windows XP and Server 2003, it could be converted to work on newer versions. Keeping windows up-to-date is essential for protecting you personal and school information stored onsite, as they are often security updates.
Its also very easy to overlook any staff device, we recommend that you make sure all staff machines have also been updated. These also connect to network 'shares' and this can be a back door into your Network.

Use Antivirus and keep it updated
Anti-Virus is already known to help with Cyber Attacks ('it does exactly what it says on the tin').
This software can ONLY perform this function if it is regularly updated. These updates are so the software knows what to look for when finding new threats to the system and how to deal with them. Again, it is often stand alone machines that are not always checked they are still updating.
Due to a recent change in how councils help with buying Sophos, many users have to update to a new Username and Password to keep getting updates. Your ICT Consultant/Technician can assist you with this

Take regular backups of the server and use 2 Hard drives
Taking Backups is normally something your IT Consultant/Technician would look after, but a backup is the ONLY way to recover a faulty device (especially a server).
2 x Backup Hard Drives are also essential to recovering from a Ransomware Attack (like the recent cyber attack). By having a second Backup, not connected to the device, it will be untouched by any Virus or Ransomware as it is not plugged in.
This leads onto another option for backups as more is better...

Get an online backup solution
An Online Backup is a very helpful thing. You have even more chance of surviving Virus threats
Online backups are not connected to your system in the same way as all your local devices. Your data in the cloud can't be attacked as data is sent to an encrypted system online. It is true that this is dependent on the company that looks after your data, but they have even bigger systems to stop any kind of Cyber Attack.
These can save you in the event of a complete catastrophe of your entire IT network even in the event of a fire (hopefully this never has to be the case)
Koala IT offer an Online Backup Solution and feel we are very competitive on pricing vs space and we base it on a successful and robust online backup system. For more info and pricing please click the link below
